Capacity-Building Session on Patient Safety

Building capacity in patient safety has been identified as a priority by the EPF Secretariat to encourage and support members’ effective participation in EPF’s patient safety-related activities; particularly the 2016 EU-level conference “Patient and Family Empowerment for Better Patient Safety” and its follow-up activity in 2017.

Given that many member organisations identify patient safety as a high-level priority, EPF decided to organise a one-day training module available to all its members to provide a good overview and understanding of EU policy, gaps and opportunities.

What is the objective?

The objective of the training is to strengthen the knowledge of EPF members in EU-level policies on patient safety and to encourage the participation in EPF’s future activities on this topic.

What will participants take from this training?

By the end of the session, the participants will have developed knowledge related to:

• Understanding the key concepts of patient safety, including “patient safety culture” and the nature of patient safety as a system challenge;
• Understanding past and present activities at EU level, including collaborative activities and the role of EU “soft law” such as the Council recommendation 2009 and the way patient safety has been prioritised by successive EU presidencies.

In addition, participants will have:

• Brainstormed on the role of patients and families in improving patient safety;
• Debated some of the specific challenges of patient empowerment in the context of patient safety, including ethical dilemmas and challenges in different healthcare settings;
• Identified priority topics from the patient perspective for inclusion in the programme of the upcoming EPF conference in November 2016.

What is more, we hope that attending the session will encourage participants to also attend the conference and/or actively participate in the task force in patient safety during 2017.

Who can participate?

The capacity-building session is open to patient representatives of a member organisation of EPF (full, associate or provisional) who:

• May have previous experience in patient safety advocacy;
• Are committed to participating in the development and implementation of patient safety-related activities in EPF;
• Have the capacity to work and communicate effectively in English.

(Note: EPF expects to be able to cover the travel and accommodation for up to 20 participants.)

When and where?

The capacity building-training on patient safety will take place on 19 October 2016, from 9.30 to 15.30, in Brussels. (Mundo B - Rue d’Edinburgh 26, 1050 Brussels – a fully accessible venue within walking distance from EPF’s offices).

The training is structured as a one-day workshop session with overview presentations by EPF and an external expert and interactive brainstorming sessions. A detailed programme will be circulated nearer the date.
