The PISCE Platform of Experts – a group set up to lead work on the promotion of self-care in minor conditions in the EU – met for its 2nd working conference on 15-16 September 2015 in Utrecht, The Netherlands.

PISCE is the “Pilot project on the promotion of self-care systems in the European Union”, a tender project of the European Commission that runs from September 2014 to February 2016. EPF is part of the consortium of project partners, together with many of our allies from the EMPATHIE tender.

Ian Banks (European Men’s Health Forum), Maria Merce Rovira Regas (European Institute for Women’s Health), and Kaisa Immonen-Charalambous (EPF) attended the meeting, which focused on revealing draft versions of the three documents PISCE is developing: Guidelines for promotion of self-care (WP1); Guidelines for development and production of communication tools (WP2); and a Report proposing policy actions on self-care at EU-level (WP3). The second day focused on developing content for the final conference of the project, and reviewing a draft fact-sheet on self-care.

PISCE was set up to explore the ways in which new technologies, such as Internet platforms, mobile apps, and sensor devices, can support self-care and empowerment of patients. Effective self-care support can lead to better quality of life and more efficient use of resources in the health system. PISCE will also address general issues, including health literacy, access to high-quality information, and health inequalities. The role of EPF as representative of patients in the consortium and the platform is precisely to make sure that the patients’ perspective is embedded at all relevant points.
